To The Interested,
As you can tell from this photograph, I've been thinking about stuff for a long, long time. At least since I was in the 9th grade. My brother Jon, the little kid to the right of me has also been thinking for a long, long time. In this photograph he's thinking about how to make your refrigerator order its own groceries, 45 years before refrigerators know how to use the telephone. Jon now makes a lot more money than I do. But I entertain myself very, very well.
How this Newsletter came to pass
Elmer’s Store, Ashfield, MA - A very cool place!
So here's what happened…
From the end of 2005 until July 2018, I owned a little restaurant and grocery store in a town called Ashfield, in Western Massachusetts. I ended up there through the courtesy of Hurricane Katrina, who took out my New Orleans home (the home I actually lived in at the time) and everything in it while I was in Massachusetts working on the Green River Festival. So, being just a little out of my mind (that'll happen when you're suddenly homeless) but kind of enchanted with this little tiny New England town of 1700 people, and being a huge fan of community and people actually talking to each other in a town's small businesses, I bought Elmer's Store (called that since 1937) and opened it back up after a three-year closure and made up how to run a store and restaurant! And it worked pretty well!
Seeing as how I'd rather write than just about anything else in life, I started writing an Elmer's Store email - originally weekly, and then more often. It started out containing the week's dinner menus but then grew to add anything that was in my head that day. And there's a lot in my head. It gained in popularity so that people all over the region, the country and then, the world started reading it and when I sold the store, people called and wrote to ask if I would still write the email! (Which was very sweet of them!) So I am. It goes out either once a week or whenever I have something new in my head, whichever comes first.
That's all that will happen - you'll just get an email that might be entertaining every week or so. Nothing else. So I hope that's all you were hoping for.
Thank you and good night.
